No Code AI

How AI is enabling users to build applications with no coding skills

No code applications enable users to create software solutions without programming knowledge by utilizing graphical user interfaces and drag-and-drop functionalities. Low-code applications provide a middle ground, allowing users to build applications with minimal coding, leveraging pre-built modules and templates for more complex customizations. Both approaches aim to accelerate development processes, making it easier for non-developers and developers to build and deploy applications efficiently.

This week, I will dive into how to use AI to create applications you can use for personal use or your business without having the technical chops of a programmer.

Can Non-Programmers Build Apps?

A few years ago, I was skeptical of low-code or no-code applications. I believe that software was way too complex for a non-coder to develop. Since then, I have softened. While I am very technical, I don’t think I could write a complex application without some help. However, since using ChatGPT, I have built a few small applications, a Chrome extension, and a WordPress plug-in.

I think having a good software architect is necessary for highly scalable applications. However, for smaller applications, creating apps has never been more accessible.

Here’s an example of how you can quickly use Claude to build a rather robust application. I randomly ran into this video by Riley Brown, who showed how he created a personalized app in a very short time using Anthropic Claude from two screenshots. I don’t know Riley, but I thought this video illustrated how to do this with Claude.

Use ChatGPT to Help Configure Your Devices

One handy use of ChatGPT is its ability to decipher an image and give directions for using a device or an app. If you take a picture or upload a screenshot, ChatGPT can usually give you instructions on how to use what’s in your picture.

Here’s a recent example. I was on vacation, and we rented a boat for the day. We wanted to sync our phone to the Bluetooth stereo system. I took a picture with my iPhone and then uploaded the picture to ChatGPT. Then, I asked how to sync my device with the stereo system. ChatGPT spits out step-by-step instructions. You can do the same for your rental car or alarm clock on a business trip or a new application that you find confusing.

ChatGPT provided instructions based on this picture and question.

Enterprise AI Essentials - Your Weekly Deep Dive

No Code AI

I was very bullish on AI, but one of the things I didn’t see coming was the ability of these AI tools to help virtually anyone create applications with such ease. These tools will radically change how businesses approach AI development, enabling non-technical users to create sophisticated AI applications without writing a single line of code.

A great example of tools that can do this is Claude Artifacts, a recently introduced feature by Anthropic. Claude Artifacts allows users to generate and interact with complex AI outputs directly within the chat interface. Claude Artifacts gives you an easy-to-use interface to chat with a single project, from creating interactive web applications to developing data visualizations.

The implications of no-code AI extend far beyond just making development more accessible. It's about customization and innovation across organizations. With these tools, domain experts in fields like marketing, finance, or healthcare can directly translate their knowledge into AI-powered solutions without the traditional bottleneck of technical implementation.

Consider the potential applications:

  • A marketing manager creating an AI-powered customer segmentation tool

  • A financial analyst developing a predictive model for market trends

  • A healthcare professional building an AI assistant for patient triage

No-code AI is not just about building applications faster; it's about putting the power of AI directly in the hands of those who understand the problems best. However, this democratization of AI development also brings challenges. Data quality, model governance, and ethical AI use become even more critical when AI development is distributed across an organization.

For example, not understanding how the application works can open up security risks, especially for applications that might be open to the internet. Similarly, without an understanding of how to scale an app, a bespoke application that works for a few concurrent users may fail under heavy usage.

Businesses must establish clear guidelines and oversight mechanisms to ensure responsible AI deployment. As we move forward, the line between "technical" and "non-technical" roles will continue to blur. The most successful organizations will be those that can effectively combine domain expertise with AI capabilities, creating a new breed of "AI-augmented" professionals across all departments. The era of no-code AI is just beginning, but its potential to transform how we work and innovate is immense. Are you ready to become a citizen AI developer?

Feature Image Prompt

This week’s feature image was created in Midjourney.

Prompt of the Week

Create an App for Me

I struggled with how to give you the best prompt for creating universally applicable applications this week. So, decided to provide an example, but you can also see how some other AI users are creating apps for ChatGPT.

How To Use This Prompt

Cut and paste this prompt into ChatGPT. This is somewhat of a choose-your-adventure, so answer the questions below, then chat back and forth to improve and debug the code. This is more of a conversation starter for creating your own application, as it could be more complex. I’d advise using simple apps like the examples above.
Since AI results are probabilistic, not deterministic, meaning you likely won’t get the same results because of changes, I can’t guarantee the output. However, in my case, this prompt created a sample application using Docker, MongoDB, and React.

# Role
You will play the role of a software engineer and will help me build an application.

# Objective
Create an application that meet the criteria specified in the interview.

# Instructions
Conduct an interview to inform the design of the application.

- What kind of application do you want to build?
- Where will you use the application (website, chrome extension, Wordpress plugin, or other?)
- Describe the user interface (you can even upload a screenshot or sketch to inform the interface).
- Provide any details on how you want the application to function.

# Output
Provide the code and instructions on how to deploy the code for the application.
