So, You Want to Work in AI?

Top job roles using LinkedIn Learning to Build AI Aptitude

According to a survey unveiled by world and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, a quarter of global chief executives expect the deployment of generative artificial intelligence to lead to headcount reductions of at least 5 percent this year.

The data shows that 2024 is the year AI at work will become real, according to the 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report from Microsoft and LinkedIn. The use of generative AI has nearly doubled in the last six months,1 with 75% of global knowledge workers using it. And employees, struggling under the pace and volume of work, are bringing their own AI to work. While leaders agree AI is a business imperative, many believe their organization lacks a plan and vision to go from individual impact to applying AI to drive the bottom line.

Don’t worry; I have a plan for you below.

The first step is mastering collaboration between humans and AI. AI is moving from a simple assistant to a partner that helps us tackle more complex tasks. Think of it this way: I use ChatGPT to draft articles, but it’s not just about spitting out words. The AI handles the heavy lifting—organizing ideas and suggesting frameworks—while I focus on refining and adding my own creativity.

Another opportunity is to use AI for coding, even if you're not a programmer. You don’t need to dive deep into coding; platforms like ChatGPT or Anthropic Claude make it easy to build useful apps without touching a line of code. I was initially skeptical of these low-code platforms, but they’ve become a viable solution for non-technical users to create apps to augment their jobs.

One thing AI still can’t do is be genuinely creative in the human sense. Sure, it can generate patterns or mimic styles, but the human ability to innovate, think outside the box, and come up with entirely new ideas will always set us apart. Jobs that require this kind of creative problem-solving, whether in design, marketing, or product development, will only become more critical.

For instance, while AI can help analyze market trends or customer data, it’s up to you to devise a groundbreaking strategy that uses that data in new ways. So, if you’re in a field that values creativity, lean into that strength. The more you combine creativity with data-driven insights, the more indispensable you’ll be.

By developing a working knowledge of AI tools, honing your ability to collaborate with AI, nurturing your creative instincts, and enhancing your emotional and ethical intelligence, you’ll be well-positioned for whatever the future brings. The key isn’t to compete with AI—it’s to learn how to leverage it while doubling down on what makes us uniquely human. This week I am diving deep into the skills you need to stay relevant and I have a new special bonus for you as read of the AIE.

AI skills to add to your resume

As Generative AI revolutionizes the workplace, professionals across industries are racing to adapt. But what skills do you need to excel in this new AI-augmented landscape? Whether you're looking to enhance your productivity or future-proof your career, I will walk you through the key competencies that will set you apart in the age of Generative AI.

Technical Skills: The Foundation

Imagine having a creative partner who never sleeps, can process vast amounts of information in seconds, and can help you generate ideas, content, and solutions at an unprecedented scale. That's the promise of Generative AI. However, to truly harness this power, you need more than just access to these tools – you need the technical skills to wield them effectively.

Technical proficiency isn't just about coding or data analysis in this new landscape. It's about understanding the language of AI, knowing how to guide these sophisticated systems, and being able to interpret and refine their outputs. These skills bridge human creativity and AI capability, allowing you to transform vague ideas into tangible results.

As we dive into the key technical competencies, remember that you're not just learning to use tools. You're learning how to amplify your abilities. Whether you're a marketer looking to create compelling content, a designer aiming to push creative boundaries, or a manager seeking to optimize processes, these skills will be your secret weapon in the AI-augmented workplace.

The New Job Landscape

To understand how to thrive in this new era, we must first explore how AI transforms the job market. Let's break down the evolving landscape into three distinct categories:

AI-Specific Jobs

AI-specific jobs are involved in creating, developing, and maintaining artificial intelligence systems. These positions are at the cutting edge of AI technology and require specialized knowledge in machine learning, neural networks, and data science. Here are the jobs that you may want to

  • AI Trainer/Developer: Refine AI models and create new applications.

  • Prompt Engineer: Crafting effective instructions for AI systems like OpenAI’s GPT models. This will go hand-in-hand with Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).

  • Machine Learning Engineer: Designing and implementing AI algorithms.

2. AI-Influenced Jobs

AI-influenced jobs are traditional roles that are being significantly transformed by integrating AI technologies. While not centered around AI development, these positions require professionals to adapt to and effectively use AI tools daily.

  • Software Developers: Incorporating AI into applications (e.g., using Github Copilot to deliver greater amounts of code)

  • Marketers: Leveraging AI for personalization (e.g., using AdCreative.ai for AI-generated ad copy).

  • Customer Service: Working alongside AI chatbots (e.g., Dante AI to automate onsite customer service).

3. AI-Augmented Jobs

AI-augmented jobs represent existing professions enhanced by AI tools, allowing professionals to amplify their capabilities and increase productivity. Most of us will fall into this category. In these roles, AI is a powerful assistant, handling routine tasks and providing insights that enable humans to focus on higher-level thinking and creativity.

  • Writers: Using Grammarly for proofreading and ChatGPT for idea generation.

  • Designers: Employing DALL-E or Midjourney for concept art creation.

  • Project Managers: Utilizing AI for resource allocation (e.g., Forecast.app or Notion for collaborative project plans).

  • Lawyers: Augment your workflows using domain-specific models trained by and for professional service providers. (e.g., Harvey)

  • Healthcare Professionals: Leveraging AI for diagnostic assistance.

As we can see, AI is creating new jobs and reshaping existing ones. This transformation brings us to a crucial question: What skills do you need to succeed in this AI-driven world?

Essential Skills for the AI Era

To navigate this new landscape effectively, you'll need a combination of technical prowess and uniquely human capabilities. Let's explore these essential skills, starting with the technical foundations:

Technical Skills

How To Use This Prompt

Cut and paste this prompt, and then complete the interview.

# Role

Act as a copywriter expert in LinkedIn about/bio sections.

# Objective

You will help me re-write my LinkedIn headline and bio.

# Instructions

You will do the following:

- Start with a succinct but compelling LinkedIn Headline (maximum character length of 220)
- Write a LinkedIn Bio (3-7 paragraphs based on the diversity of your background)
- Uses a keyword-rich skills list in the LinkedIn Bio, if my profile has skills endorsements that are relevant to the narrative of my bio then use them.

## Examples of LinkedIn Headlines

The Diversified Solopreneur | Building my one-person business to $5M in revenue. Posts & articles about the process.

I help companies understand and use artificial intelligence. I share my knowledge via The Artificially Intelligent Enteprise newsletter.

## Examples of LinkedIn Bio

I always thought my dream was to be a proofreader for a little indie publishing company, sipping my cafe con leche and reading the opening lines to the next best-selling vampire novel. It seemed like an appropriate dream given my BA in English. I gravitated toward proofreading and quality control positions and even started my own proofreading business. But I kind of just felt meh. I yearned to learn more, yearned to learn something different.

And that's when it happened; the spark I was missing ignited the instant I clicked play on my first Python tutorial video. (I mean seriously, how could it not be great when it's named after Monty Python's Flying Circus?) Since then, I can't get enough. Web development calls to all my passions; it incorporates creativity and problem solving and I'm allowed to break it to improve the code (in a separate Git branch, of course).

I love applying responsive design principles and watching my web pages shrink into mobile screens and still look amazing. It's oddly satisfying. I think in a way I'm kind of like those web pages; I'm moldable, but I still keep my creative flare intact.

My specialties include quickly learning new skills and programming languages, problem solving, domain driven design, responsive design principles, website optimization, and the Model View View Model (MVVM) and Model View Controller (MVC) methods of organizing code. So far I have C#, .Net Framework, SQL, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Angular, and Git/GitHub under my belt. I'm still enthusiastically grabbing onto any other programming languages, frameworks, or principles I can integrate into the coding web in my head.

# Conduct an Interview

Now ask these questions one by one; ask the 1st question and then let me answer; then, ask me the second question, then ask me the third question and then the fourth and finally ask me the fifth question.

1. What is your expertise?
2. Who is your target audience?
3. What are the pain points of your target audience?
4. What value do you bring in ?
5. What is the URL of your LinkedIn Profile?

After all questions are answered create a draft of a LinkedIn Headline and Bio.

I create the images for each newsletter using Midjourney.
